Dear Minister Ritz,

I am writing to express my deepest concerns about genetically engineered (GE) wheat.

I do not want to eat GE wheat or feed GE wheat to my family. I want to keep my bread, my cake, my couscous, my bagel, my pasta and my wheat beer, GE-Free!

GE wheat has already been rejected by farmers and consumers across the world. In fact, the strong, widespread objections of farmers and consumers in Canada (and the United States) resulted in Monsanto withdrawing its request for government approval of GE wheat in 2004.

However, I am now gravely concerned that, despite this sound rejection, companies like Monsanto are preparing to re-submit a request for commercialization of GE wheat in Canada.

Just this May, industry groups in Canada, Australia and US pledged to synchronize their efforts to commercialize GE wheat. This is a threat to Canadian wheat.

I ask the Government to take immediate steps to ban the commercialization of GE Wheat in Canada, in order to make sure that industry cannot force GE wheat onto a market that does not want or need it.

I ask the Canadian Government to protect our democracy by tightening and improving our regulations of GE crops and foods. Not only are the existing regulations inadequate in assessing the potential environmental and health impacts of GE products, but there are no mechanisms for considering the economic damage that GE wheat and other GE products can cause. Without incorporating a way to hear from farmers and consumers about the potential economic and social impacts of GE, our regulation system for GE crops and foods remains undemocratic and allows for the introduction of GE products that can irreparably damage our economy and social fabric.

I urge you to take immediate action to protect our Canadian wheat from genetic engineering.
