Write to your restaurant

Is GM salmon on the menu?

If you order salmon at your favorite restaurant and this is not wild salmon, you could be eating GM salmon. All Atlantic salmon is farmed salmon and some Atlantic salmon is now genetically modified.

Writing a letter to the owner or manager of the restaurant can be very influential. If you ask employees when you are at restaurants and stores, they will likely not have the information you are seeking and may not pass your concerns on to the decision-makers in the company.

Please send any response you get to CBAN: info@cban.ca

Here is some possible language and information you could incorporate into a letter to your restaurant:

I am a customer. I love your restaurant.

Please send me your assurance that you are not selling genetically modified (GM, also called genetically engineered) Atlantic salmon.

The GM salmon is the world’s first GM food animal and is hugely controversial, including because of environmental concerns.

GM food is not labelled and GM salmon could be sold to you without any labelling or disclosure. Please ask your supplier to only sell non-GM salmon to you.

Please ensure that the world’s first GM fish is not on your menu.

I look forward to your response.

Thank you,
