The Canadian Government has approved Monsanto’s herbicide resistant (Roundup Ready) alfalfa and a small amount is now being grown in Eastern Canada. Was Monsanto waiting for the rules to change? In 2007, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency changed the variety registration process and called this “seed modernization”. CBAN produced a guide to these consultations and objected to the changes because of our analysis that they would allow genetically engineered crop varieties to be approved quickly, without the safeguards for farmers established through the variety registration process.
