GM Products
We monitor and undertake careful research to determine the market status of genetically modified (GM or genetically engineered) foods in Canada. Without mandatory product labelling, announcements about genetic experiments and newly approved GM foods can be misleading. For example, media stories about new research have led to the common assumption that most of our foods are GM, but this is not true. In fact, most breakthrough GM discoveries never make it out of the lab. Additionally, government approvals for new GM foods do not automatically mean the GM products will be sold. Similarly, some GM products appear on the market and then quickly disappear. The Canadian government does not provide a clear list of GM products approved, and does not track which GM foods are on the market. See our 2015 report “Where in the World Are GM Foods and Crops?” and our 2020 report “GMOs in Your Grocery Store: Ranking company transparency”.
